NJD League Teams go the Distance!

This year 10 NJD teams advanced to Nationals, including 2 Junior Team Tennis teams!  This is a great showing by the New Jersey District and we'd like to thank everyone who played, helping to make for another successful year of USTA League Tennis.  One of  these teams was the 18 and under Intermediate Nassau Godz 'n Goddezzez. They competed this past weekend at Nationals in South Carolina making it all the way to the championship match! We asked the Nassau Tennis Club Junior Team Tennis members what they love about playing team tennis and here's what they had to say:

As straightforward as this may sound, my favorite part about JTT is having the opportunity to play on a team. JTT lets you play an individual sport within a team setting. It's nice being able to have an entire group of people cheering you on and supporting you, whether you win or lose. Even after our competitions, we still act like a team. Celebratory dinners at Applebee's, swimming at the Nassau Club pool, and playing tag in a hotel in Arizona are just a few of the memories I've made with my team. Choosing to join JTT has been one of the best decisions of my life because it's given me the opportunity to play with my friends, rather than against them, meet new people, learn the importance of teamwork, and travel around the country.

I have been a part of USTA's Junoir Team Tennis  (JTT) Program at Nassau Tennis Club for 5 years. While tennis is typically viewed as an individual sport, JTT brings another dimension to the tennis experience. I formed lasting friendships, improved my tennis skills, all while having fun. Although each player comes from a different background, we all come together as a team and cheer each other on. In 2012, my 14 and under JTT team was able to advance to the National Championships and became finalists. Three years later, I am enthusiastic and honored to once again compete at Nationals. I think I can speak for the whole team when I say: we are all very excited to represent middle states at nationals.

My tennis "career" so far has included 3 extraordinary experiences:  USTA tournaments, High School team play and Junior Team Tennis.  All three provide an opportunity to compete, improve and be part of a wonderful sport community.  For me, it's all about challenging myself and achieving improvement goals.  What JTT uniquely offers is a way to make an individual sport into a team sport, a chance to play singles, doubles and mixed doubles, and the excitement of advancing from the local league to Districts, to Sectionals, and now to Nationals!

Junior Team Tennis has made a big difference in my attitude toward tennis.  Having the support of a team every time I go on the court has given me a huge amount of confidence that has helped me improve my game in tournaments, and motivated me to work hard to improve.  I really like how the players and parents have all come together to make our team feel like a big family.  We support each other on and off the court, whether we are organizing our own practices, getting together for celebration parties or competing in matches on the way to Nationals.  I also enjoyed volunteering to help coach a younger team during the local league this past season.  Hopefully, some of these new players will have the same great experience that I did as they continue to play.
